5:18 pm - Lifelong ambition satisfied!
|
My dad used to play in a band called the Dixiecats in Sutton (where my family is from) in the 50's. The class of '59 asked him to play for their 50th reunion. My dad and his brother (another former Dixiecat), my brother and I played the date last night, with era-appropriate music. I've always wanted to sing for a band, but never thought I'd get to because of stage fright, but.....pharmaceuticals!
Had a blast; Blueberry Hill, and Johnny B. Goode, Twilight Time, Rock Around the Clock, Blue Moon of Kentucky, some Buddy Holly and Elvis and Patsy Cline, etc. 2 one-hour sets. They liked us! Dad, brother and I are going to do some more dates. Squeeeeee!

Raksha ("she-demon") is the mother wolf who raises Mowgli in The Jungle Books. I love Kipling, even if he was a racist chauvinist pig.

5:45 pm - If Not Now, When?
|
For me, part of celebrating Independence Day is acknowledging that our freedoms are under constant attack, often more from within than without. Much as we owe our Founding Parents, their legacy survives only because of a long line of subsequest patriots who have stood--often alone--against attempts by those in power to diminish that freedom that the founders sought to guarantee us. So, today, I give thanks not only for Jefferson, Washington, Adams, Franklin et al, but also for Ella Baker, Pete Seeger, the entire Chicago 8, Dr. King and Gloria Steinem, Harry Hay and Will Geer (yes, Grandpa Walton--I'm serious, go Google), Malcolm X and Sojourner Truth, Mother Jones and Joe Hill, Edward R. Murrow, Cindy Sheehan, Harvey Milk, Audre Lord, and many, many more. You are cordially invited to add to the list in comments.
Two special recognitions: First,to Keith Olbermann of MSNBC for his blistering commentaries on the shenanigans of the current administration. Last night's was a barnburner. You can view it on the show's website at MSNBC.
Second, and perhaps best, to Leah Anthony Libresco, who represents the full potential of our future. Look here to see why: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/leah-anthony-libresco/what-i-learned-at-the-rev_b_54832.html
Finally, although men (and women) may be flawed by the times they live in, wisdom shines through and stands the test of time. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you...Mr. Thomas Jefferson: "Enlighten the people, generally, and tyranny and oppressions of body and mind will vanish like spirits at the dawn of day."
"Honesty is the first chapter of the book of wisdom." "Say nothing of my religion. It is known to God and myself alone. Its evidence before the world is to be sought in my life: if it has been honest and dutiful to society the religion which has regulated it cannot be a bad one." "The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it always to be kept alive."
"The will of the people is the only legitimate foundation of any government, and to protect its free expression should be our first object." "We in America do not have government by the majority. We have government by the majority who participate."
"I have the consolation of having added nothing to my private fortune during my public service, and of retiring with hands clean as they are empty."
"An honest man can feel no pleasure in the exercise of power over his fellow citizens." "I have sworn upon the altar of God, eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man." "It is error alone which needs the support of government. Truth can stand by itself." "A little rebellion now and then...is a medicine necessary for the sound health of government."
"Whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends [life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness] it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it, and to institute new government..."
"Indeed, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just: that his justice cannot sleep forever." "We must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt."
"The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg."
And, one of my personal favorites:
"Rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God."
Hit the streets, if you haven't already! Revolution is our birthright.

10:39 pm - I've been mommed!

Just spent a day and a half with my mother. Her parting comment was that I looked like an illiterate old hag that just came down out of the holler (this in reference to my braid, which she nags me to cut and color). Hey! I'm a poet! Does anyone have anything nice to say to me? If so, now would be a good time.

9:27 pm - An ancient bunny
|
The first show I ever got fangirlishly obsessed with was Beauty and the Beast, which ran in the late 80's-early 90's. No computer then, and I had never heard of fanfic. Just recently, I've been thinking about it a lot. The series ended very unsatisfactorily, due to Linda Hamilton's abrupt departure to do the Terminator. Anyone remember it? Anyone know where there's any fanfic? Would anyone be interested in reading Vincent/Catherine fic? Just to give the thing a better ending?
One other thing: I bought myself a late holiday/early birthday gift, which was delivered yesterday: A Smile Time vamped-out Angel puppet! I love it, although I'm strangely disappointed that his nose doesn't come of.

12:27 am - 6 Random Facts
|
Well, Roxy, having been gang-tagged, did this little exercise and didn't tag anyone in return. So I'll volunteer.
The assignment is to reveal 6 little known/surprising facts about u-self. Here goes:
1. I'm a Witch, and a damned good one. I recently did a spell with friends that totally turned around a very bad situation. It saved a little girl's life. Contrary to rumor, that's what Witches do--protect and promote the life-force.
2. I'm also a minister in training for one of the oldest denominations in these United States. No secret--I'm out as a Witch, and still welcome into this fellowship of ministers, in a denomination that's included 5 US presidents.
3. I've walked barefoot across 8 feet of red-hot coals. The jeans I was wearing got burns, but I was uninjured.
4. On my mother's side, I'm directly descended from Hotspur Harry Percy (See Shakespeare's Henry IV) and King Henry II, who allowed himself to be publicly flogged as penance for instigating the murder of Thomas a Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury.
5. I am an alcoholic.
6. I love flowers with a passion. And cats and dogs, and infants.
